INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair 2008
The last year winner in the category Science at the “Jugend Innovativ competition” Mister Philipp Zagar (HTL Wels) has won at the Intel ISEF, the world greatest pre-academic scientific competition, the 3rd place in chemistry. He won USD 1,000.- for his work “Synthesis of a Linker Molecule for Self-Assembled Monolayers(SAM)” which was donated by the Intel Foundation.
As the world’s largest pre-college science fair, and the only global science competition for students in grades 9-12, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, a program of Society for Science & the Public, represents the pinnacle of high school science fairs. In 2008, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair will be held in Atlanta, Ga., from May 11-16. This year’s program will include a record number of 1,557 high school students from 51 countries presenting 1,241 projects. Female students comprise 48% of those entered in the competition.
Finalists are selected annually from more than 550 affiliated fairs around the world. Each affiliated fair can send its top two individual projects and one team project to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Finalists’ projects often address issues that have stumped scientists for years and may very well lead to major scientific breakthroughs. In fact, nearly 20% of the projects being presented this year either have been patented or have been submitted to be patented. Projects represent a wide range of scientific disciplines, and are judged in 18 categories:
