The Formula One project of HTL Steyr

This is an incredible story. HTL Steyr revived a Formula One engine that was developed 15 years ago in Eisenerz. The successful start of the engine is the highlight of the project so far. With the support of internationally renowned F1 experts Peter Marlow (Lehmann Motorentechnik, FL), Eberhard Haberkern (BOSCH Motorsport, D) and Horst Pichler (Autohaus Pichler, A) the engine was put into operation on the 20th of March this year. The head of the project Bruno Losbichler said: “With the successful start of the F1 engine we have set a milestone in the school’s 135 year history. This event again demonstrates the competence of the Vehicle Engineering Division and the high level of education of HTL Steyr.”
What is remarkable in this school project, which lasted several years, is that work is cross-curricular and interdisciplinary (workshop, theory and divisions). 25 students, 9 teachers and 16 project partners from business take part and form a virtual educational cluster via the Internet. With the two project stages “engine” and “test stand”, HTL Steyr went far beyond what is feasible at a school. It still depends on the sponsoring issue whether stage 3 “vehicle” will also be implemented, because the Formula One is expensive. It is to be hoped that HTL Steyr will also get a racing car and continue to race ahead.
